Alize Sotelo Gutiérrez is a Basque filmmaker, animator and curator working between London and Spain. She graduated with honours in Animation from the University of the Arts London and was awarded the Ágorart Scholarship from the Government of Navarre in 2020, which enabled her to undertake postgraduate studies in Screenwriting at Birkbeck, University of London.
Her work explores themes of memory, identity and cultural heritage through animation, often combining historical research with expressive visual storytelling. She currently combines teaching animation at the University of the Arts London with her work on a range of animation projects, both independent and commercial. Alongside this, she curates exhibitions focused on moving image and digital arts, including film, animation and VR.
Throughout her career, she has collaborated with organisations including Miyu Productions, the British Library, Secret Cinema and Disney Concerts. She was selected for the Animation Sans Frontières 2023 residency, where her animated short film Ortzimugan, currently in pre-production, began development. The project was later selected for the Animation Incubator at the 2025 ZINEBI International Festival of Documentary and Short Film of Bilbao.
Her previous short film, Chopping Wood Chips, screened at more than 40 international festivals, including Animafest Zagreb and ZINEBI.
